What Is Actually Living in Your Mattress

You spend around a third of your life on it, breathing six inches above it, and it is the one thing in the house that never gets cleaned. Most people wash the sheets weekly and have never once thought about what is underneath them. It is worth knowing, mainly because the fix is straightforward.

Half a Litre a Night

A sleeping adult loses roughly half a litre of moisture in a night through perspiration and breathing. Some of it evaporates; a good deal of it goes down into the mattress, along with body oil and the skin cells everybody sheds continuously. None of that stops at the surface. Over years it accumulates in the padding as a slowly building reservoir, which is exactly why an old mattress develops yellow-brown shadowing where people sleep even though nothing was ever spilled on it.

The Colony That Feeds on It

Dust mites eat shed skin and need humidity to survive. A mattress supplies both, in the dark, at a steady temperature, which makes it the single best habitat in an average home. The mites themselves are harmless. What causes trouble is their droppings, which contain proteins that are a well-documented trigger for asthma and allergic rhinitis, and which sit in the fibres waiting to be disturbed every time somebody rolls over.

This is why a person can wake up congested every morning and clear up within an hour of getting out of bed, then blame the season. If somebody in the house has that pattern, the bedroom is the room to deal with first — and the carpet in the same room is the second half of the same problem.

Why Vacuuming It Yourself Does Little

A household vacuum can lift surface debris, but two things work against it. It has no meaningful agitation to bring material up out of the padding, and unless it carries a sealed HEPA filter it passes the finest particles — the allergenic ones — straight back into the room through the exhaust. The net result on a bedroom vacuum is often a redistribution rather than a removal.

Not Every Mattress Takes the Same Method

  • Sprung and pillow-top: hot water extraction, with recovery matched to what goes in.
  • Memory foam and latex: a low-moisture method only. Open-cell foam holds water in its core, where nothing dries it and mould will grow.
  • Any mattress with an accident in it: treated to the depth the liquid actually reached, not just the visible mark.

Getting this wrong is expensive and irreversible, which is the main argument for having mattress cleaning done properly rather than experimenting with a hire machine on a foam mattress.

Old Stains and Why the Smell Comes Back

Urine, whether from a child, an animal or illness, is the most commonly underestimated problem in a bedroom. What lands on the surface passes into the padding and often to the base. Cleaning the top removes the mark and leaves the source, so the smell returns on the first humid week and everybody assumes it is a new accident. Treating it means reaching the full depth, which is a different job from removing a stain.

What Actually Helps in Between

  • A washable, zipped protector, laundered hot every couple of months. This is the highest-value thing on the list by a wide margin.
  • Wash sheets weekly at the warmest temperature the fabric allows.
  • Pull the covers back for half an hour each morning and let the moisture from the night evaporate instead of trapping it.
  • Air the bedroom daily, even in July. Mites need humidity, and a closed Melbourne bedroom in winter supplies plenty.
  • Rotate the mattress every few months so compression and moisture load spread evenly.

How Often

Every twelve months is sensible for most households, and every six where there are allergies, asthma, small children or pets on the bed. A mattress is also worth doing whenever one comes into the house second-hand, before anyone sleeps on it.

While the room is being done, the upholstered bedhead is worth adding — it collects a band of hair product and skin oil at pillow height and is almost always skipped. The same oil that darkens sofa armrests is doing it there too.

Booking It

It is done in the bedroom, the bed is usable the same night, and it is very commonly booked with the carpet cleaning in the same rooms because the setting up only happens once. Tell us the mattress sizes, the type if you know it, and whether there are any accidents to treat, and you will have a firm price on the call.
