Why Your Sofa Armrests Go Dark and Shiny

It usually gets noticed in the same way. Somebody is about to visit, you look at the lounge properly for the first time in months, and the armrests have gone darker and slightly glossy while the rest of the suite has not. It looks like wear. It is almost never wear, and it comes out.

What the Shine Actually Is

Human skin produces oil continuously, and hair products add more. Every time a forearm rests on an arm of the sofa or a head leans back against a cushion, a small amount transfers into the fabric. It is invisible on day one and invisible on day one hundred. What makes it visible eventually is that oil is sticky: it holds onto airborne dust and skin flakes that would otherwise be vacuumed away, and that mixture darkens the fibre.

The gloss comes from the same place. Oil-loaded fibres lie flatter and reflect light more evenly than clean ones, so the patch reads as shiny next to the matte fabric around it. Both the darkening and the shine sit in the fibre rather than on it, which is exactly why wiping the area with a damp cloth achieves nothing.

Why It Appears Where It Does

Map the dark patches on any well-used sofa and you have mapped how the household sits. Headrests on the two favourite seats. The inner face of both arms. The front edge of the seat cushions where legs swing over. On a three-seater, the middle cushion is usually the cleanest thing in the room, because nobody sits there.

The Tag Decides Everything

Under one of the seat cushions, or stapled to the frame, is a small label carrying a cleaning code. It is the single most important thing on the furniture:

• W — water-based cleaning is safe.
• S — solvent only. Water will leave rings far worse than the original soiling.
• WS — either method is acceptable.
• X — vacuum only. Any liquid at all risks shrinking or marking it.

Most of the permanently damaged furniture we are called to look at was cleaned with water on an S-code fabric by somebody who did not know the code existed. If the tag has been cut off, the answer is to test on a hidden section rather than guess, which is the first step in any professional upholstery clean.

Leather Behaves Differently

On leather the same contact points go dark, but the risk is the opposite one. Hide cracks because oils leave it, not because dirt arrives on it. So leather is cleaned with a pH-balanced product and then conditioned, and skipping the second half is how a lounge ends up split across the seats a few years early. Pale hides have a second problem entirely: dye transfer from denim, which is a stain sitting in the finish rather than soil sitting on it.

What You Can Do Between Cleans

• Vacuum the crevices monthly with the narrow tool. Grit trapped in a seam cuts fibre every time someone sits down.
• Turn and rotate the seat cushions so the wear spreads instead of concentrating.
• Wash removable arm covers and throws separately, and often — that is what they are for.
• Blot spills immediately with a white cloth, pressing rather than rubbing, working inwards from the edge.
• Keep the suite out of direct afternoon sun, because fading is damage and no clean reverses it.

How Often Is Reasonable

Every twelve to eighteen months for a lounge in daily use, and every twelve where pets get on the furniture, small children are about, or somebody in the house has allergies. Dining chairs can usually wait longer unless they are pale. The reason to keep to it is not appearance: grit abrades the fibre mechanically and body oil weakens it chemically, so a suite cleaned regularly genuinely lasts years longer than one cleaned twice in its life.

The same logic applies to the largest soft surface in most bedrooms, for much the same reasons — what is actually living in your mattress covers that one.
